The Salvation Army Homestead – Alice M Walter House provides an atmosphere of acceptance, warmth and safety. We are a longer term treatment option that gives structure and flexibility, a wide variety of learning opportunities and time to practice new skills. We offer a holistic approach that takes into account your physical, spiritual and emotional needs and your personal goals.

Who is Staff Captain Alice M Walter

Our treatment options are:

  • A longer term, six-to-ten week live-in program for women in one of the most beautiful areas of downtown Toronto
  • A six-week to ten-week women’s day treatment program at our downtown site

Our mission is to partner with women in their journey of recovery.

The vision of The Salvation Army Homestead – Alice M Walter House is to develop positive relationships enabling women to heal in body, mind and spirit.

Live-In Treatment Program Inclusion Criteria

We accept people into to the program according to the following criteria:

  • Women, self-identifying women or non-binary individuals
  • 18 years of age or over
  • Self-identifies with an addiction or concurrent disorder
  • Stabilized on Opiate Replacement Therapies (Methadone/Suboxone)
    • Please Note: clients must be stabilized and agreeable to remaining on this treatment for the duration of their program (adjustments may be made based on the doctor’s assessment); clients will not be tapered off while in program

Our Treatment Program

The program employs the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) model as the main agency framework and also provides:

    • Trauma Informed Care (including Seeking Safety)
    • Smoking Cessation, using Motivational Interviewing (MI)
    • Strength Based philosophical approach
    • Stages of Change Framework
    • Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) (instruments include the Happiness Scale {Social Determinants of Health} and the Functional Analysis of Relapse)
    • Motivational Interviewing
    • Rational Emotive Behavioural Therapy
    • Pre-treatment programming
    • Continuing Care Programming
    • Solution Focused Therapy
    • Individualized treatment planning (e.g. use of internal and external treatment resources)
    • Individual counselling with clients
    • Group Process
    • Life Skill classes
    • Relapse Prevention Classes
    • Spiritual Care and Chapel Services
    • Living Skills
    • Social Integration/Outings
    • Anger Management
    • Choice Theory/Reality Therapy
    • Connection with external organizations (e.g., outside organizations providing classes within the treatment program)
    • Community supports for clients in treatment including 12 Step meetings, psychiatric referrals, family doctors
    • Discharge planning includes connecting the client to external service providers
    • Referrals

The Salvation Army Homestead – Alice M Walter House programs are open to women from all over Ontario.


How to Apply

  1. Interested individuals may make their initial inquiry by telephone to the Intake Worker- 416-921-0953.   All inquiries will receive a response within 24 hours
  2. The Intake Worker will complete an Initial Screener Assessment
  3. The Intake Worker will schedule an admission date or make an appropriate referral
  4. Incarcerated individuals will be provided with a window of time in which the Intake Worker will be available for their collect call
